Castelo de Silves

The Castelo de Silves, one of the most striking monuments in the Algarve, originated as a Roman fortification and was expanded by the Muslims between the 8th and 13th centuries, becoming one of the finest examples of Islamic military architecture in Portugal. Located at the highest point of the city, it offers breathtaking views over Silves and the River Arade.

Today, Castelo de Silves hosts cultural events, shows, medieval fairs and guided tours, promoting the region’s historical and cultural heritage. Castelo de Silves is also one of the most popular destinations in the Algarve for weddings, as it has a large terrace offering idyllic views over the town and the river.
